How to Become a CNA in Utah

As do all states Utah also has its own certification requirements for anyone who wants to become a CNA. When looking for a CNA certification program in Utah, make sure that the course is accredited and approved by the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry.

Enrollment and Completing CNA Classes

Step 1

Find an approved program in your state:

You can find at least 60 approved CNA training programs in Utah. These programs are located in local vocational schools, hospitals, and other licensed medical facilities. Courses approved by the Utah Registry must have a minimum of 80 classroom hours.

You will be required to pass a mandatory criminal background and get a full physical and health screening.

Step 2

Complete your CNA training. This should include both an in-class learning component as well as a clinical hands-on component, where the student will put their skills to the test in a clinical setting.

Your CNA training courses will teach you nursing basics and other related skills. You will learn how to perform tasks like monitoring and recording a patient’s physical and mental state of being, interacting with patients, safety, sanitation, and understanding medical terminology.

During the hands-on portion of your training, you will practically apply what you learned in the classroom.

CNA Testing Procedures and CNA Certification

Step 2

Register to take the CNA certification exam, administered by D&S Diversified Technologies Headmaster. Testing fees are usually required when you submit your registration package and typically are about $70. You must pay fees with a money order or certified check.

Step 3

It’s important to study before your CNA certification exam. We also encourage you to take our CNA practice tests to polish up on your CNA knowledge and skills ahead of the real test.

Step 4

Pass your CNA certification exam. 

You should arrive early to the test site so you have time to check in and settle in before the test. Also, bring a photo ID. A state ID or driver’s license will do.

The CNA certification exam in Utah consists of two sections – a written section and a skills section. The written section of the exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, and it is designed to test you on what you learned during your training. This may include such things as basic nursing skills, reacting to emergency situations, patient rights, and infection control.

The skills portion of the exam is designed to test how well you perform basic nursing tasks. In this portion, you must be wearing scrubs, a watch, and close-toed shoes; also, your hair must be short or tied back, and you should not be wearing big or dangling jewelry. To pass this portion of the exam, you will be required to take a “patient’s” vital signs and wash your hands as needed. You will also need to perform five additional skills as well.

After you finish the test, your results will be calculated and official results will be mailed to you within around 10 days. If you pass, you will be added to the Utah State Nurse Aide Registry and can start seeking a CNA job.

Step 5

Create your CNA resume with care. This will often be a very influential part of securing a CNA job.

You may be thrilled to learn that the Utah Department of Workforce Services predicts a tremendous CNA job growth rate of 37% for Utah. The current median CNA salary is around $22,260 a year. Wages increase with experience and depend to some extent on which area of Utah you live in. You can also increase your salary by furthering your education and pursuing RN or LPN degree programs.
