How to Become a CNA in Vermont

CNAs perform a variety of tasks that can change from day to day. Many people might choose to work as CNAs while they go on to train for other nursing careers like registered nursing or licensed practical nursing positions. Enrollment and Completing CNA Classes
Step 1
Find and enroll in an approved program in your state:
Find a CNA Training Program
You must find a program that offers CNA classes and that meets the state and federal guidelines. Approved CNA training programs in Vermont must have at least 75 course hours. Hands-on training in a patient care facility must be included in your training.
Many schools require students to be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED. All schools will require enrolling students to undergo a full health screening including a drug check and a two part TB test. For the safety of patients, enrollees must also submit to a criminal background check.
Step 2
Complete your CNA training program.
You will learn a variety of nursing aide skills in your CNA training. For example, you will be taught how to handle emergencies, how to help patients with their daily needs, and how to maintain paperwork and patient records.
You must also learn to change patients’ clothing and tend to all of their grooming needs. You will be expected to perform these tasks and similar ones during your hands-on training.
CNA Testing Procedures and CNA Certification
Step 1
Apply to take the CNA certification exam in Vermont.
The exam is administered by D&S Diversified Technologies. You can apply either by phone, mail, or online. There are registration fees which must be sent in with your application before you receive a test date.
Step 2
Make sure to stay fresh on the materials you learned in your CNA training. You can do this by taking our practice tests before your exam.
Step 3
Pass the CNA certification exam. You should bring a state ID and arrive early to the exam location so you have plenty of time to check in and settle in.
You will be given 90 minutes to complete the first portion of the test which is made up of 72 multiple-choice questions. You must pass this portion with at least an 80%.
The second portion of the test requires you to perform the tasks you learned in training. During this portion of the exam, an evaluator will choose five tasks for you to perform. You will have 45 minutes to complete this portion of the exam and need at least an 80% to pass.
If you pass both portions of the exam, you can then apply with the Vermont Board of Nursing and become listed as a CNA on the Licensed Nurse Aide Registry.
Step 4
Create your resume which should include your training, skills, certification, and experience. You can then look for CNA jobs.
